Darts ace Gray on target

Adrian Gray produced his best display on the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) circuit since 2008 on Saturday.

The St Leonards thrower won five matches, one of which was against the world number seven, to reach the semi-finals of the Gleneagle Hotel Players Championship in Killarney.

Gray started off with a 6-4 victory against Irish newcomer Marty Moreland before producing a stunning display to whitewash Grand Prix semi-finalist Brendan Dolan, ranked 21st, 6-0.

The 31-year-old again upped his game to see off 87th-ranked Darren Johnson 6-3 in the last 32 and delivered again to overcome a resurgent Andy Jenkins, ranked 91, 6-4 in the last 16.

Gray faced Premier League star Andy “Hammer” Hamilton in the quarter-finals and edged through 6-5 after some stunning darts from both players.

His magnificent run came to an end in the last four with a 6-4 loss against 27th-ranked Peter “Snakebite” Wright 6-4, but he had done enough to earn a cheque for £2,000.

Wright, incidentally, went on to win the tournament by defeating UK Open champion Robert Thornton in the final. Gray now moves up from 106th to 88th on the PDC order of merit.
