Dave's setting hot pace in the veterans

Lewes runner Dave Robinson was the hero for Herne Hill Harriers, his London club team, in the National Veterans's Road Relays Championships in Cardiff.

Robinson never fulfilled his undoubted talent either over the country or on the roads until he joined the veterans's age group in which he has been setting the over-40 age group alight.

Back in September Robinson ran the third fastest lap in the South of England Road Relay Championships at Aldershot, and in Cardiff, running the final leg for his team, he took over for his 3km stint 100 metres down on former British Olympian Nick Rose from Bristol.

Robinson gradually wore down the lead, but it was not until the final 500m that he got within striking distance and pounced, moving into the lead and then drawing clear for a splendid victory by some 50 metres.

Robinson's leg time of 9 minutes 27 seconds was the fastest lap of the day by a full eight seconds.

Newhaven's Robbie James has been in fine form in recent weeks with a fine victory over the country at Ardingly and a silver medal in the Sussex Half-Marathon Championships two weeks ago.

James tackled both terrains in the Steepdown 8km multi-terrain race at Lancing, where he raced clear of the reigning Sussex under 20 cross-country champion Tom Fuller from Worthing. James clocked 27 minutes 18 seconds to Fuller's 27:48, with Sussex Downs College's Joe Isherwood, who is still in the under-20 age group, filling third place in 28:09.

Former county 10km road running champion Gill Wheeler from Hailsham was in cracking form in the Hilden Health 10km road race at Abbots Wood.

Facing the talented Rosalie Uphill from Hastings, the Hailsham runner led Uphill a merry dance, winning by more than one minute in 39:49.

In the same event Sally Musson from Crowborough finished third overall and won the over-50 age group in 41:56.

The Jog Shop Jog multi-terrain 20-mile race is a tough test for any runner as it follows the switchback course from the Brighton Marina before climbing through Saltdean to the back of Kingston and then back down to the Marina.
