Davis in frame for finals place

Mark Davis has taken a significant step towards securing his place in snooker’s Players Tour Championship finals.

The St Leonards cueman reached the quarter-finals of Euro Players Tour Championship event four at the South West Snooker Academy near Gloucester last weekend.

Davis, the world no.19, lies 19th on the Players Tour Championship order of merit with the top 24 after the two remaining events advancing to contest the televised finals next spring.

He opened his campaign with a 4-0 whitewash of 90th-ranked Patrick Einsle before notching up a very good 4-1 victory over 21st-ranked Ricky Walden, who beat Hastings-based amateur Jamie Walker 4-0 in round one.

Davis then won 4-2 against 54th-ranked Jamie Jones, who had knocked out world no.2 Ali Carter 4-1 in the previous round, to book his place in the last 16 on Sunday morning.

There the reigning Six Reds World Champion overcame 12th-ranked Peter Ebdon, the 2002 World Champion, 4-1 but his run was ended by eventual champion 20th-ranked Stephen Lee, a winner of four ranking event titles, 4-2.

Bexhill-based Jimmy Robertson, ranked 63rd in the world, overcame 91st-ranked Jak Jones 4-1 in round one before being edged out 4-3 by Ebdon in round two. The 24-year-old lies 29th on the Players Tour Championship order of merit.
