The St Leonards cueman was beaten 6-4 by Stephen Maguire at The Barbican Centre in York after a match featuring three century breaks and four other runs over 50.

World number 20 Davis clinched the opening frame fairly comfortably, but scored just 18 points in the next four as 15th-ranked Maguire seemingly took charge with breaks of 125, 127 and 60.

Scottish potter Maguire amazingly failed to score a point in the next three frames as it was Davis’s turn to rattle the pockets. The 43-year-old knocked in splendid runs of 128 and 77 en route to levelling at 4-4.

In a see-saw contest, however, the momentum shifted shifted once again. Davis scored only 11 points in the subsequent two frames as 2004 champion Maguire sealed victory with breaks of 55 and 84.

Davis, who reached the semi-finals in 2012 and quarter-finals last year, had beaten former world champion Ken Doherty 6-3 and Scottish potter Rhys Clark 6-1 in the previous two rounds.
