The St Leonards cueman was beaten 4-0 by Stuart Bingham in the quarter-finals of the prestigious new tournament having knocked out two of the sport’s top players in the previous rounds.

Televised live on ITV4, both players had chances during a scrappy opening frame in Llandudno, North Wales. Davis looked set to pinch it when he cleared from green to pink only to miss the final black and present Bingham with the simplest of pots to take the frame.

World number nine Bingham rattled through the second frame without conceding a point thanks to runs of 56 and 42. There were no breaks over 30 in frame three, but Bingham claimed it 73-23 to move within one of victory.

Davis, ranked 19, compiled a break of 53 - by far and away his highest of the match - to establish a healthy lead in the fourth, yet Bingham replied with a 71 to book his place in tomorrow’s semi-finals.

Despite the disappointment of losing to good friend Bingham, Davis can still reflect on two splendid wins earlier in the 32-man event boasting a £100,000 top prize.

The 42-year-old, who reached the quarter-finals of last week’s Indian Open, saw off 10th-ranked Hong Kong player Marco Fu 4-1 in round one on Tuesday when he recovered from losing the opening frame to win the next four with breaks of 52, 102 and 109.

He then came from 3-1 down to stun world number two Neil Robertson 4-3 in round two on Wednesday. Davis knocked in breaks of 60, 81 and 63 before clinching an epic 82-minute deciding frame on the black.

Davis will now turn his attentions to the Players Championship Grand Finals in Thailand next week. He will face world number six Ricky Walden in round one next Wednesday morning.
