St Leonards-based Davis lost 4-0 to reigning world champion O’Sullivan in his opening match at the 888casino Champion of Champions.

World number 13 Davis was ahead early in the first frame at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena before number one seed O’Sullivan clinched it with a break of 69.

Six-reds world champion Davis scored just 15 points thereafter as eventual champion O’Sullivan rattled through the next three frames with impressive runs of 54, 101 and 130.

Televised on ITV 4, the 888casino Champion of Champions is snooker’s new big money event featuring 16 of the world’s top players.

Davis, 41, will be back at the table this Friday morning when he begins his UK Championship campaign against 119th-ranked Finnish cueman Robin Hull.
