Dawson delighted with Raiders’ win at Hartpury

Worthing Raiders Rugby Club are beginning to hit top form after a last-gasp win at fellow title contenders Hartpury College on Saturday.

Joe Govett was the Worthing hero as he nailed a penalty with the last play of the game to give Raiders a second successive one-point win and 15-14 victory.

Head coach Kieron Dawson said: “It was a great performance by the lads, they showed great guts and the heart and determination was phenomenal.

“It’s a very pleasing win. I think that having played some of the perceived lower teams in the league early in the season, we’d struggled to get motivated and to hit last season’s form.

“But we’ve played Redruth and Hartpury in the last two weeks, who will be two of the main contenders, and we’ve got going now as we’ve realised what we’ve got to do this season.

“It was a great win at Hartpury, particularly when you consider what happened last year (Raiders lost 49-14)and their side is probably superior to last year as well.

“We’ve still got room for improvement, though. We probably should have scored four or five tries but the last pass just didn’t go to hand.

“Once we put everything together and once we hit our full straps, we’re going to be a hard team to beat.”
