Day of the Dragon

WORTHING Football Club and local non-league fans were compensated for not hosting defending champions England because it was their guests Wales who came to Woodside Road and took the title home to the Land of Song.

The 3-0 Welsh win over the Irish at lunchtime asked England at Eastbourne Borough later that afternoon to win by a three-goal margin, or win by two and score four or more goals.

They could win only 2-0, scoring twice late in the game, but both crowds had experienced a nailbiting climax to the competition, although Wales had several hours of agonising before they knew they had done enough.
