Deadly Digweed lands 22nd world title

The Northiam-based marksman clinched his latest honour at the World ICTSF English Sporting Clay Championships at the Galt Sportsman Club, near Cambridge, Ontario, Canada.

Digweed finished the two-day event - which attracted the very best of the clay shots from around the world - two clays ahead of his nearest rival following a demanding final 25 target shoot-off for the top 10 contestants.

He said: “This year has just been phenomenal with no less than two World Championships in different disciplines along with two European Championships in different disciplines added to my tally, definitely my most successful year to date.

“The different disciplines would equate to Lewis Hamilton winning both the Formula One World Championship and the Rally Cross World Championship. The testing layout in Canada really sorted everyone out and I am delighted to have beaten some of the sport’s most established clay pigeon shots to gain another title.”

There cannot be any current British sportsperson who continues to have such a major impact on their sport as Digweed has done in the world of clay pigeon shooting.

There is arguably no other British sportsman, past or present, who has dominated for so long and won so many titles in their chosen sport. Digweed has remained at the top of shooting for four decades having won his first World Championship back in 1988.

In addition to the World Championship triumphs, Digweed has won 18 European Championships, along with numerous silver and bronze medals in both world and European events. He has been described by many experts in the shooting world as possibly “the most accomplished shot of all time” and received an MBE from the Queen in 2009.
