Defeat is tough on weakened Mussels

JOINT-SHOREHAM Football Club manager Fred Proto felt his below-strength side deserved a point at high-flying Selsey on Tuesday night after going down to a late goal.

Proto said: "I think we were good value for a draw. With a weakened side out, I was pleased with the way we played. We hit the post at 1-1 and had another two or three chances which were just off target."

Mussels were without strikers Shaheen Sadough and Craig Bunch, keeper Ronan Callaghan and defender and captain, Danny Gainsford. All should return for Shoreham's Friday night Senior Cup tie at home to Worthing United.

In what was an entertaining and fairly even contest on Tuesday, Shoreham took a fourth-minute lead through Ben Boiling, who then gave away the penalty that led to Selsey's equaliser, before Tom Ridley netted a controversial decider.

Boiling's goal came after four minutes when he was given space to turn and fire home from 15 yards, having collected a pass from Richard Carter.

Just six minutes later, however, Boiling turned sinner when his mistimed tackle allowed Daren Pearce to convert from the spot.
