Depleted Horsham impress in cup defeat at Whitehawk

Gary Charman got the response he demanded from his Horsham players after Saturday’s debacle with a much-improved display in a 3-0 defeat away at Whitehawk in the Sussex Senior Cup.

With a number of players missing, Charman changed the formation to 3-5-2 and his side had good chances, especially in a promising first half before the Conference South side ran out winners with second half goals from Danny Mills, Tom Cadmore and Tommy Fraser.

It was a vast improvement from the weekend’s 5-1 home defeat to Folkestone Invicta and Charman said: “We knew our backs were against the wall before the game with five players missing but the whole team were fantastic.

“The scoreline did not do justice to the game at all, we were the better side in the first half and should have gone into half-time at least 1-0 up.

“Yes they were the better team in the second half but we still created chances and played some good football. The improvements from Saturday were massive.”

Whitehawk were almost at full strength and Charman added: “They were looking for a win to get confidence up after a few defeats so they put their best side out which makes the performance even better,

“I said to them afterwards we shouldn’t have to play a team two leagues above us to perform like that but I’m hoping it will give us confidence to improve our league form.”

Horsham travel to Herne Bay on Saturday desperate for a victory to lift them up from 20th in the Ryman South table.
