LEWES Golf Club came through a thrilling quarter-final in the Davies and Tate team competition against East Sussex National. The match was played at the Uckfield course and was only their second loss in the Davies & Tate in three years.

A large number of Lewes supporters cheered on the strong team and enjoyed a day of high quality golf.

The 3-1 win in the morning went to the wire. In a match that looked like it was going to the National, Henry Hilton's chip off the bank at the back of the 18th left Tom Hilton to sink a long putt if Lewes were to stay in the match. Tom holed leaving the opposition with a short putt for the half. The pressure was too much and the match result of 1 up gave Lewes a 3 '“ 1 start in the afternoon.

The afternoon singles produced one of the tightest finishes in recent memory. After nine holes Lewes were up in only two matches, but the team kept their cool. With three matches still live and playing holes 16, 17 and 18, Lewes needed 1 points to secure the win.

One down with three to play, AJ Boyse turned matters around to win. This meant that the crucial half needed to come from either Lawrie Tremlett who was standing on the 16th tee 1 down or from Steve Verth who was all square at the 18th tee.

In the event, Steve made the half and Lawrie came through to win 1 up. The overall result was 7 - 4 .

In the semi-finals, which will be played on neutral territory on Saturday, August 12, they will face Copthorne.
