Dundonnell at Glorious Goodwood is almost a Dun deal

Dundonnell is on course for Glorious Goodwood with connections eyeing a tilt at either the £150,000 bet365 Group Two Lennox Stakes over seven furlongs on the opening day, Tuesday, July 30, or the £60,000 Group Three Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes over a mile on Friday, August 2.

Entries for the bet365 Lennox Stakes close early for the first time this year on Tuesday, July 9, and the seven-furlong contest also has an increased prize fund of £150,000 - up from £140,000 in 2012.

The Roger Charlton-trained Dundonnell, a Group Three winner at two in the seven-furlong Acomb Stakes at York last year, finished sixth to Dawn Approach in the Group One St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 18, having landed the seven-furlong Listed King Charles II Stakes under a penalty at Newmarket on May 18.

Lord Grimthorpe, racing manager to Dundonnell’s owner Khalid Abdullah, revealed today: “We are looking at our options for Dundonell and both the Lennox Stakes and Thoroughbred Stakes are under consideration.

“I thought he ran well at Royal Ascot. He did not quite get the run of the race but it was a very high-class race. He got the mile OK and, although he didn’t get clearest passage, ran right to the line.

“He won well over seven furlongs before that so he is versatile but we aren’t favouring one race over the other at this stage and will have a look nearer the time.”

The bet365 Lennox Stakes has produced top-class performers with recent winners Chachaimaidee (2012), Paco Boy (2008) and Court Masterpiece (2005) all going on to score at Group One level. Court Masterpiece returned to Glorious Goodwood in 2006 to win the course’s flagship race, the QIPCO Sussex Stakes, over a mile.

Gordon Lord Byron, who won last season’s Group One Prix de la Foret at Longchamp over seven furlongs, has been earmarked for the bet365 Lennox Stakes by trainer Tom Hogan after a fourth-placed finish in the Group One Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 22.

Dawn Approach is likely to take on again Toronado, whom he beat a short-head at Royal Ascot, in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes on July 31.
