Jimmy Robertson defeated two of the game’s top 16 players to get within a game of the quarter-finals of European Tour event two, the Paul Hunter Classic, and Mark Davis also made it to the same stage.

World number 45 Robertson, from Bexhill, whitewashed 40th-ranked Northern Irish player Gerard Greene 4-0 in the opening round on Saturday morning helped by breaks of 77 and 54.

He then pipped world number 15 Maguire 4-3 in a terrific second round contest the same afternoon. Two breaks of 59 helped put Robertson 2-0 up only for Scottish player Maguire to reel off the next three.

Robertson won frame six 104-0, however, with a closing break of 72 and then came from 60 points behind to edge a dramatic decider 69-61 with a top break of 43.

Robertson overcame 13th-ranked Fu 4-2 in round three on Saturday evening to avenge his defeat against the Hong Kong potter at the World Championship back in April.

He again took a 2-0 lead after winning two tight frames, and although Fu levelled at 2-2, Robertson clinched the next two, coming from 59 points behind to seal victory in frame six.

Robertson’s run was ended by a 4-2 loss against 25th-ranked Ali Carter in the last 16 on Sunday morning. Carter swiftly opened up a 3-0 lead helped by breaks of 86 and 112, but Robertson pulled one back with a 67 and then took frame five on the black before eventual champion Carter won it in frame six.

World number 19 Davis, from St Leonards, scraped past 114th-ranked Paul Davison 4-3 in round one. Davis led 2-0 and 3-2, but eventually needed a 47 break - his highest of the match - to edge the deciding frame 62-52.

He then saw off world number 26 Alan McManus 4-2 in round two. McManus won the opening frame, but Davis reeled off the next three helped by breaks of 45 and 84. A 52 wasn’t enough to Davis to seal victory in frame five, but he did get over the line in the next aided by a 45.

Davis outgunned 39th-ranked David Gilbert by the same score in round three. He quickly opened up a 3-0 lead with breaks of 51 and 47, and although Gilbert took the next two frames, Davis finished things off in the sixth.

The 43-year-old looked to be on his way to the quarter-finals when he established a 3-0 lead against Stuart Carrington with top breaks of 55 and 41. World number 59 Carrington produced a remarkable turnaround, though, to win the next four frames for a 4-3 victory aided by runs of 67, 62 and 45.
