Eagles secure narrow lead

The Eastbourne Eagles made their last appearance of the season on Arlington shale on Satruday against Poole and Oxford in the first leg of the Craven Shield final.

They only managed to secure a one point lead over Oxford before the next two legs of the final - at Poole on Wednesday and at Oxford on Thursday.

The Shield offers the three clubs, all of whom have suffered their disappointments in 2005, the opportunity to end the year with some tangible rewards.

Current holders Poole, who were weakened by injuries at Arlington, will be anxious not to let the trophy slip from their grasp, particularly as they have been deposed as both Elite League and Knockout Cup champions in recent weeks.

Mark Loram guested for the Eagles in place of long-term casualty David Norris and joined Nicki Pedersen and Adam Shields as the Sussex club's heavy hitters.

Pedersen top scored for the Eagles with a 12-point maximum. He received strong support from Shields and Loram but Davey Watt had a disappointing night.
