Egerton celebrate county double

EGERTON Park enjoyed a double triumph as it played host to the Sussex County Indoor Bowls finals on Sunday.

The Bexhill club was victorious in the triples and under-25 singles events before a healthy gathering of around 100 spectators.

"It was a very good day for the club," said Charles Wright, one third of the triumphant triples team, "and it was well-supported too. All three of us bowled very well and the singles was a very, very good final."

Wright joined forces with Steve Sands and Trevor Monk to defeat a Grattons team skipped by Mick Chiappori 17-10. The in-form Egerton trio led throughout and there was rarely much doubt that the club would secure the title for the third year in a row.

It was an all-Egerton Park final in the under-25 event and a cracker it was too as Kevin Carrie edged out Stuart Holland jnr 21-18 in a see-saw battle. It looked like it would be a routine title defence for Carrie when he opened up a 14-2 lead, but 16-year-old Holland fought back brilliantly to take an 18-17 lead. Carrie held his nerve, though, with successive twos to ensure the win.
