Egg-citing Easter football programme

IT WAS a busy Easter for our County League clubs with Sidley United, Rye & Iden United, Westfield and Bexhill Town all involved in important matches.

Rye & Iden were the most successful as they moved closer to a spectacular Division Two double.

They beat Eastbourne Town 2-0 to lift the Division Two Challenge Cup on Good Friday and defeated near neighbours Westfield 1-0 on Easter Monday to move a step closer to league glory.

Shaun Loft was the star player, scoring in both games and winning the man of the match award in the cup final with skipper Scott Price scoring the other goal. United are now two points behind leaders Shoreham with four games in hand.

Westfield turned in a decent display against Rye & Iden only to be undone by Loft's late strike.

Before that they condemned Bosham to relegation with a 5-0 drubbing with Lee Wood (2), Duncan Jones (2) and Steve Ringwood on target.

Sidley United's push for second place in Division One suffered another hiccup as they lost 3-1 to arch rivals Ringmer on Monday, with youngster Shae Spreafico scoring a consolation.

Two days earlier The Blues beat relegated Saltdean United 2-0 with strikes from Graham Morris (penalty) and Dave Ward.

Bexhill endured a bad weekend as their fight against relegation from the County League took a turn for the worse.

Promotion hopefuls Forest won 2-0 on Saturday and Newhaven clinched a 4-0 victory two days later. Town are three points clear of the drop zone with three games to play.
