Ex-Common cricketer in Spanish squad

FORMER Little Common Ramblers youth player Matthew Winter has been selected for a Spanish national cricket squad.

The 14-year-old, who spent most of his formative years in Bexhill and Cooden, is included in the country's 13-man under-15 party to contest the International ICC Tournament in Rome from August 7-14.

Matthew is eligible to play for Spain after emigrating with his family last year.

"He's done fantastically well," said father Clive who left England after his son's schooling began to suffer. "It went a bit pear-shaped for him and as we had a house in Spain we decided to educate him out there."

Matthew has always been a talented cricketer and the sport is very popular where he lives on the Costa Blanca.

His skills earned him a trial at the La Manga sporting complex along with other talented young players from all over Spain, and he did enough to secure a place in the squad which will meet up in Madrid before travelling on to Rome.
