Fewings form on the track is anything but chequered

It has been a busy period for Bognor driver Dale Fewings in the Superstox formula. He has raced at two meetings in the past fortnight; the Spedeweekend at Ipswich and the English Championship at Aldershot.

Fewings began at the Foxhall Stadium, Ipswich, where a packed grid of over 30 cars was competing for the Eaton Family Trophy. Over the two days, the class would have two heats and then the final.

Things started well for our driver as in the first race he was able to deal with the heat on the day, and push through a crowded field to come home fourth.

After a few adjustments on the car in the pits, he came out for the second race with a steely determination. With plenty of the traditional lunging seen in the Superstox, Fewings charged from the outside and got to the front. Once there he stayed in the lead to take the chequered flag.

Boyed by this result, he was confident ahead of the final. Things didn’t quite go to plan there though, and for all his guile and experience it was never enough going to be enough to breach the top ten.

On Sunday, Fewings travelled up to Aldershot for the English championship. The first race of the day was the feature race. A lot of time in the garage had been spent ensuring that the car was set up perfectly.

At the track another large field of experienced and seasoned drivers greeted Fewings. When the green flag dropped, he was clearly in the mood for an upset. When a large crash happened on the top bend involving three cars, including Superstar driver Sarah Cooper, the race was stopped in the interests of safety.

From the restart, the cars were bunched up again which favoured Fewings. Pushing on, he was able to finish in an impressive 4th place, behind the winner, visiting driver Jason Cooper.

In the next race, the car seemed a little off the pace, which can be critical with these 2 litre Ford Pinto engines. Some strong racing saw Fewings come home in seventh.

The last race of the day saw everything come together. With some further adjustments to the engine, and an element of channelled focus, he went out to finish the day off right. This is exactly what he did, with a sterling performance taking him across the line in first place.

Overall, a very good set of results for car number 602.

The Spedeworth season continues at Arlington, every Wednesday through to the end of September.
