Fight show features world title bout

Gillingham-based fighter Jakub Doman triumphed in a cracking contest against Dutch young gun Onur Sahin, from the world-famous Mikes Gym.

The eighth instalment of the series - Phoenix Fight Night - at Sussex Coast College Hastings also featured, for the first time, two Thai rules fights, which certainly appealed to the near capacity crowd.

What’s more, there were six local fighters on the card in the form of Henri Burnham, Dave Verlander, John Quinnell, Ben Mitchell, Gaynor Hyde and Elliott Hallworth.

Fighting Tigers owner Andy Chambers was most impressed with his young talent Hallworth, who at the age of just 17, contested his sixth fight in total and first in Thai rules.

Hallworth impressed throughout his fight against 27-year-old Ron Tsu, from Kicks in Brighton, dominating every round and getting the victory he deserved.

Chambers said: “Elliott produced a truly mature performance. He listened and didn’t rush his fight by steaming in. We are very excited about his future.”

Fight fans were privileged to have three-time world super middleweight boxing champion Rob Reid and ‘Big’ Joe Egan - a man described as ‘the toughest white man on the planet’ by his former sparring partner Mike Tyson - in attendance.
