Saxons scored two goals in the first half and three in the second to win 5-3 at home to Penguin in what, at the start of play, was a clash of Sussex Open Hockey League Division One’s top two.

Although Saxons started strongly, dominating possession and creating many chances, it was Penguin who took a surprise lead after a Saxons lapse of concentration.

The home side continued to pile on the pressure, however, and it eventually paid off in the form of a penalty flick which Alex Coombs calmly slotted home.

Soon afterwards, Toby Reed finished off a well-worked short corner to make it 2-1 at half time.

Saxons picked up in the second half where they left off in the first as Coombs added his second with a smart finish.

Saxons sustained the pressure with fast play and Coombs found Olli Beal, who finished off a fine passing move which started with good work from Tudor Stainsby.

Penguin soon pulled one back to make it 4-2 only for Saxons to restore their three-goal lead straight from the push-back through Jamie Busbridge’s reverse stick shot.

The visitors again pulled one back, but Saxons weren’t to be denied their first victory in three meetings with Penguin this season. Saxons’ man of the match was Harry Reece.
