Fontwell reflect on fantastic family raceday

FONTWELL PARK enjoyed one of its best race days for a long time as a crowd of around 6,000 enjoyed an action-packed afternoon of jump racing and kids’ entertainment.

Unlike a number of their big meetings this year which have been affected by poor weather, the rain stayed away and families came out in force to enjoy the fun.

Fontwell marketing manager Max Roberts said: “It was one of the busiest days we’ve ever had. There were around 6,000 people on site.

“A great day was had by all and the free entertainment and Peppa Pig seemed to go down a very well with the public and the weather was kind to us.”

On the track, Grand National-winning jockey Leighton Aspell provided one of the highlights with a surprise six-length win on 16-1 shot Yesyoucan in the Equiniti International Payments Handicap Hurdle.

His win, for trainer Neil Mulholland, was the biggest-priced of the day but Yesyoucan wasn’t the only relative outsider to win.

The Family Fun Raceday With Equiniti Handicap Chase went to the Diana Grissell-trained Houseparty at 10-1 and Lizzie Kelly rode Brass Monkey to victory at 8-1 in the Club-Together.org Race With Equiniti Handicap Hurdle.

Racing kicked off with the Butlins Day Visits £Yourbestbetforagranddayout Handicap Hurdle, won by 2/1 favourite Horsted Valley (Gavin Sheehan/Warren Greatrex) – a horse tipped by Observer sports editor Steve Bone on the morning of racing.

Trainer Jamie Snowden was delighted by Detroit Blues justifying 7-4 favouritism in the Ted Dear Retirement Classic National Hunt Maiden Hurdle under Michael Nolan.

Andrew Thornton and Seamus Mullins teamed up for success in the Selftrade Trade Anywhere Mobile App Handicap Chase with 7-2 favourite Adrenalin Flight, while James Best and Caroline Keevil were celebrating victory with 6/1 chance La Madonnina in the Equiniti Leaders In Technology Handicap Chase.

Fontwell stages two more meetings before its mid-summer break – on Wednesday, June 3, and Tuesday, June 9.
