Fontwell's firm favourites fail to do the business

Four favourites out of seven were first past the post at Fontwell Park's British Heart Foundation charity raceday - but it was two that weren't who were the talk of the racecourse.

The first three races all went to the favourite - Quazy De Joie (tipped on this website on Tuesday night), Teenage Kicks and Knight Legend doing the business with Tony McCoy, Matt Griffiths and Richard Johnson on board respectively.

But when you thought you could be reasonably certain the formbook would be followed again, it wasn’t.

First Paddy Brennan on Blue Signal beat the clear favourite Piment D’Estruval in the fifth race of the afternoon - then the staggeringly-priced 1/5 favourite Themanfromfraam, tipped as a near-cert three days after romping home in a tougher race at the same course - was beaten by 8/1 second-favourite Sovereign Spirit, guided in by Tom Cannon.

Some bookies had even been taking bets disregarding the favourite, so short were its odds.
