FOOTBALL: Arundel return to winning ways

ARUNDEL Football Club bounced back from a 6-0 hammering by Worthing in the FA Cup, to get their County League Division 1 campaign back on track with a 2-0 win over Selsey at Mill Road on Tuesday evening.

A disappointing display saw them crash out of the cup to the Ryman League side on Saturday (report on page 82), but goals from Scott Tipper and Matt Axell immediately returned them to winning ways in the league against nine-man Selsey.

Mullets assistant manager Simon Butler was delighted with the response the players showed, in a match which Arundel could have won even more handsomely had it not been for a series of fine saves from Selsey keeper Sam Joyce.

Butler said: "I was disappointed on Saturday, and I felt sorry for the players as they didn't show 300-plus people what they are capable of.

"They got their heads round it though, rallied, and played some lovely football on Tuesday, so I was very pleased.

"We responded very well, which is really positive, obviously we weren't going to win the FA Cup, maybe a league cup and the league is what we're looking for, so that was another three points in the bag."

Joyce was forced into two early saves from Tipper before Arundel went ahead on 26 minutes. Axell delivered a pin-point cross and Tipper rose to glance a header into the far corner from 14 yards.

Mullets could have doubled their lead five minutes before the break, but Joyce matched Lewis Hamilton's free kick and Tipper fired over the rebound.

Within five minutes of the restart, though, Arundel had their second. A flowing 15-pass move, heavily involving Gary Norgate, Axell and Neighbour in the build-up, eventually saw Axell firing home from 16 yards.

Selsey's frustrations then boiled over as captain Alan Morey picked up his second yellow card for dissent on 74 minutes, while his brother, Graham, got a straight red three minutes later for the same offence.

Joyce continued to keep Arundel's score down, including the best save of the match from substitute Luca Coleman-Carr.
