FOOTBALL: Brotherton gives Rebels victory at Chatham

JAMIE BROTHERTON'S 23rd-minute goal was enough to give Worthing Football Club a 1-0 win at Chatham on Saturday (December 5).

The win keeps Rebels second in Ryman League Division 1 South, and they have closed the gap on leaders Folkestone to a point after Folkestone drew 1-1 at Horsham YMCA.

At Chatham, Worthing had an opportunity on 10 minutes when Evan Archibald stretched to get a boot on Ross Treleaven's cross but Dean Ruddy easily saved.

Archibald then had a close-range effort saved from Brotherton's free kick on 18 minutes before Rebels took the lead five minutes later.

Treleaven passed to Brotherton, who fired home with his left foot from 12 yards for his 13th goal of the season.

In the second half, Chatham's Steffan Galfie had a snap-shot saved by Worthing keeper Alan Mansfield on 60 minutes.

At the other end, Rebels substitute Ben Williamson shot wide from 10 yards on 71 minutes and Stuart Axten headed Ben Johnson's free kick wide two minutes later.
