FOOTBALL: County League round-up (February 13)

ARUNDEL Football Club manager Richard Towers was left to rue his side's finishing after they lost 2-1 at improving Crowborough on Saturday.

He said: "The two goals we conceded were poor and the match summed us up.

"We missed too many chances, and even though they've improved I felt we should have beaten them. We had most of the possession and the chances, but poor finishing cost us."

Depleted Mullets, with several first-team regulars unavailable, fell behind through Sam Carrington in the 20th minute.

Carrington got his, and Crows', second two minutes before half-time, despite Arundel's protests that the ball had not crossed the line.

With 20 minutes to go, Gary Norgate netted a penalty, his first goal since re-signing for Mullets, but despite late pressure, Crowborough held on.

Towers added: "When Gary scored, I still thought we'd go on to get something but it wasn't to be. It was definitely a game we should have won."

Mullets' match at Redhill on Tuesday was postponed owing to a waterlogged pitch.

Arundel host Eastbourne UA on Saturday, then travel to Crawley Down on Tuesday. Rob Grove and Dave Walker both miss the Eastbourne game through suspension.

ARUNDEL: O'Connor; Sneller, Hall, Walker, Grantham; J.Biggs, Basil, R.Biggs, Neighbour; Norgate, Tipper. Subs: Tewsley (Basil 82), Griffiths.

Littlehampton's unbeaten league run extended to six games in Division 2 with a battling point against promotion-chasing Worthing United on Saturday.

Their excellent run has left Golds with a faint chance of making the promotion places themselves, but boss John Suter refused to see it that way, and said: "I don't think we can, we just need to keep going, and, if it happens, it would be remarkable.

"We just want to finish as high as we can. Our run-in is tough and we'll have to see what happens."

On the game, which ended 0-0, Suter, who came up against one of his former sides, added: "It was a scrappy affair. From our point of view it's not a bad result and it carries on our good form."

Jamie Buckett had an effort saved and Barney Boutwood fired wide against his old club in a game of few chances.

For United, Julian Curnow struck the bar and Darren Annis headed over, but both sides had to settle for a point.

Golds will be without top-scorer Matt Russell, who is unavailable, but should otherwise be at full-strength on Saturday when they host Steyning Town.

LITTLEHAMPTON; Stoner; Tabor, Windsor, McKay, Sayers; Buckett, Russell, O'Hagan, Peacock; Boutwood, Adedoja. Subs: Lawson (Adedoja 60), Manning (O'Hagan 75), Charman (Boutwood 82), Crawford, Wollers.

East Preston went down 2-0 at home to Rye on Saturday in Division 2.

Sam Cole gave Rye the lead after just four minutes and Duncan McArthur doubled the lead midway through the second period.

Rustington boss Kevin Short will be wary of Division 2 bottom side Midhurst on Saturday, whose dire form seems to be on the turn.

Four of Midhurst's eight points have come in their last two games, albeit against fellow relegation battlers, Steyning and Southwick.

Blues will also be looking for some revenge after going down 2-0 at Midhurst at the end of November.

Short said: "We didn't play well at all that day, and they are on a bit of a turn now.

"We'll have to be on top of our game but, if we play as well as we can, then I know we'll be all right."

Blues welcome back goalkeeper Andy McCarthy, who was injured in the warm-up against Oakwood, while Lee Gibbs could also be fit.

Rustington's match at Little Common in Division 2 was postponed owing to a frozen pitch last Saturday.
