FOOTBALL: County League round-up (September 9)

GARY Block is considering his future as Wick Football Club manager after they crashed to an 8-0 defeat at Chichester in County League Division 1 on Tuesday evening.

He said: "I've always said that if my team gets beaten 8-0, I'd consider resigning and that's what I'll do.

"I've never been beaten 8-0 as a player or a manager before and the only positive to take from the game is that it wasn't 12-0.

"Six of their goals were down to us and four to our keeper, but we were just too weak all round and weren't fit enough, although Chichester were a very good, well-drilled side."

On Saturday, Wick host Eastbourne UA, who were thrashed 9-1 at Peacehaven on Tuesday and lost 8-1 to Pagham on Saturday, and Block said: "I'll be considering my future over the weekend but will be in charge for that game. But if we lose that, I will be off."

Arundel went down to a 3-1 defeat at Pagham in County League Division 1 on Tuesday after two costly mistakes at the start of the second half.

Mullets led at half-time through a brilliant Lewis Hamilton strike and they could have been more in front at the break.

But David Walker tripped Scott Murfin in the penalty area early in the second period and the former Wick striker scored from the spot, before Mullets keeper Rhys Griffiths spilled a long-range Joe Booker shot and Michael Frangou tapped home on 55 minutes.

Gary Norgate was denied by a stunning save from Pagham keeper Wes Hallett as Arundel pushed for an equaliser, before Pagham sealed their win late on through Alex Kew.

East Preston grabbed a winner six minutes into injury-time to win 4-3 at Oakwood in the first-qualifying round of the FA Vase on Saturday.

Dale Campbell netted after a goalmouth scramble as the game appeared to be heading to extra-time. Oakwood had drawn level four minutes into stoppage-time and EP assistant manager Paul Bird said: "We'd conceded late goals in our previous couple of games and did it again, which we have to stop doing.

"But we showed a lot of character to go down the other end to get the winner."

Littlehampton lost their tie 5-1 at division-higher Three Bridges but boss John Suter took more positives than negatives from the game.

David Gaskin fired high and wide Littlehampton's best chance of the first half and Golds trailed 1-0 at the break after Joel O'Hara headed home on 42 minutes.

Gaskin brought Golds level seven minutes into the second half when he tucked away Joe Charman's cross and he had the ball in the net again two minutes later but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Lee Carney's free kick restored Bridges' lead on 65 minutes and they then added three more in the last 20 minutes through George Hillier (two) and Elliot Romain.

Littlehampton manager John Suter said: "It was disappointing to come away with a 5-1 defeat after a good first-half performance.

"But there were more positives than negatives to come out of it. Joe Charman made his comeback from injury, Matt Russell played his first game since towards the end of last season after injury, and Ben Boutwood, who has turned down approaches from Worthing United and Wick, had a very good game."

He said: "It was diabolical and we just gave up, which no one likes to see. It was very disappointing all-round and we could have lost by more.

"We were okay for the first 20 minutes but then just collapsed like England's batting order. It was the most embarrassing moment of my 19-year playing and managing career – the scoreline just says it all.

We've got to play better against Bexhill on Saturday, otherwise the same will happen again."

Craig Grantham, Kristian Harding and Tim Martin all hit hat-tricks for Storrington, who led 3-0 at half-time.

Wick boss Gary Block said: "We played all right for 60 minutes and were 1-0 up but a couple of goalkeeping errors deflated us and mistakes cost us.

"We played well for an hour but we have to start playing well for 90 minutes, especially against the better sides. And when we get ourselves in front, we've got to hold on to it."

WICK: Corbin; Urquhart, Heller, Bradshaw, French; A.Brown, Bagura, Wrigley, D.Towers; Forden, S.Towers. Subs: Squires (Wrigley 70), Haga-Hammond (A.Brown 80), Beadle (S.Towers 86), Walsh.

Tipper gave Mullets, who had seven players unavailable, the lead in the County League Division 1 match after just three minutes.

Barry McCoy's free kick doubled the advantage on 69 minutes and Tipper then got the third from the penalty spot two minutes later after Howard Neighbour was tripped.

Wheatcroft said: "Scott's been absolutely brilliant and he will get even better when we get a chance to work on things on the training ground.

"I think he'll get 30 goals this season. He's lethal at the moment and thinks he will score every week. I'm chuffed to bits with him."
