FOOTBALL: EP and Clymping share the spoils

EAST Preston's 1-1 draw at home against local rivals Clymping in Division 2 on Easter Monday was a real case of the morning after the night before in footballing terms.

Neither side really took the game by the scruff of the neck but EP would have been the happier with the shared points.

In truth, Clymping should have had all three sewn up by half-time but poor finishing let them down.

Joe Stokes and Joe Shelley missed golden headed opportunities from close range that should have ended up in the back of the net, while Richy Moss failed to strike when he had the goal at his mercy just 10 minutes in.

Clymping did manage to open their account with a neat one-two between Moss and Shelley on the edge of the box, which saw Shelley smash an unstoppable drive past Maciek Kason in the EP goal after 36 minutes.

EP came out an improved outfit after the break, but failed to really test Michael Oakley. It was a spot of luck that gave them their equaliser when the impressive Kieran Howard curled a corner in off Oakley's far post with 13 minutes left.

EP felt that they should have had an equaliser earlier, however, when Kevin Budge shot from close range after a scramble in the Clymping box.

Oakley managed to flap the ball out of harm's way, but appeared to do so from behind his own line.

It was not given, and would have been an injustice had EP taken all three points from a game that had so few memorable moments.

Both managers acknowledged the lack of quality after the game. EP boss Paul Curtis said: "All-in-all, it was a point gained for us as we had a number of players missing and they had quite a few good chances that should have won them the game."

Clymping player-manager Dominic Di Paola said: "It was disappointing as we had enough chances to win the game but our finishing let us down, although we did run out of steam a bit after Saturday's game."
