Gazza was in one of the racecourse’s restaurants but was only too happy to go down to the winner’s enclosure, meet fans and be interviewed.

Gascoigne even presented the prizes after one of the race.

Around 4,500 race-goers made the most of the late summer sun to enjoy a card of seven races, which was overshadowed by a nasty fall suffered by Sussex jockey Leighton Aspell. He was unconscious at first but was conscious by the time he left the site in an ambulance, heading for hospital in Brighton where he underwent checks.

Fontwell marketing manager Max Roberts said: “There was a great turnout for our second family fun day of the year, including footballing legend Paul Gascoigne who kindly gave an interview and presented an award in the winning circle before chatting to a number of fans.

“A mixture of fantastic racing including two pony races, sunny weather and heaps of free entertainment for the children meant there was something for everyone.”

The lethal Fontwell duo of jockey Tom Cannon and trainer Chris Gordon notched another double and Aidan Coleman rode his 50th winner on Mountainside for John Ferguson – and went on to No51 on Taradrewe for Anthony Honeyball.

Fontwell are now looking forward to welcoming race-goers back for their two-day Oktoberfest on October 2 and 3.
