FOOTBALL: Littlehampton exit FA Cup at Beckenham

DESPITE Littlehampton Football Club surviving what manager John Suter described as a "1-1 thrashing" to Beckenham, in the FA Cup extra-preliminary on Sunday, they crashed out in the replay at the Kent League side on Tuesday night.

Golds went down 3-0 in the replay but Suter, who seemed to think the fixture was not much more than a formality, was pleased with an improved performance.

Suter said: "It was a fair reflection, really, they are a good side and created lots of opportunities, fortunately they are wasteful in front of goal.

"We played better than we did on Saturday, but the worst thing that happened to us was getting an equaliser, and having to go up there.

"It would have been nice for the revenue of a run, but sooner or later your're going to exit the FA Cup. It's disappointing to go out at the first stage, though."

It took Beckenham, despite hitting the post twice in the first half, 50 minutes to break the deadlock, where they then crashed home three goals in 15 minutes.

Substitute Quentin Conteh put the home side in front as he nodded home at the far post. Soon after, Danny Gorman cut in from the left and his strike bobbled over Golds' goalkeeper James Askew. The third was an own goal from Ross McKay, as he lost his footing when trying to clear, slicing into his own net.

On Sunday, Golds somehow survived a 90-minute battering to escape with a draw to force the replay. The tie, played at Worthing's Woodside Road, started badly for Golds when Darren Wise put the Kent league side ahead on 20 minutes.

After hitting the post twice, having four efforts cleared off the line, and Askew making save after save, Beckenham failed to capitalise and Dave Gaskin, who had played in goal in Littlehampton's last two games, was picked out by Niall O'Hagan, and he hit home in the final minute of injury-time. Suter said: "We were hammered, battered, and thrashed 1-1."

LITTLEHAMPTON on Tuesday: Askew; Tabor, McKay, Young, Crawford, Bennett; White, O'Hagan, Peacock; Boutwood, Jarvis. Subs: Gaskin (Jarvis 65), Wollers (Crawford 75), Kawallierou (O'Hagan 80), Adedoja, Collender.
