FOOTBALL: Mullets boss Wheatcroft has high hopes

ARUNDEL Football Club's new boss Gary Wheatcroft has his sights set high for the Mill Road club. He is looking to combine his ex-professional experience and contacts, along with what he already rates as an impressive squad at Mullets.

Wheatcroft, who played for Portsmouth and Southampton as well as for Dutch side Harlem FC, is looking forward to getting stuck into the County League and trying out a few tricks of the trade he has learned over the years.

He said: "I'm absolutely over the moon to have got the job here. I had applied for a few local jobs as I wanted to work in the Sussex County League.

"I found my meeting with the chairman very comfortable, he is a lovely bloke and it already feels like I have been here for years.

"He has put no pressure on me, although I will probably do that myself as being an ex-professional I want to win in every game and everything I do."

Wheatcroft, who lives in Horsham, has been impressed with what he has already seen of the Arundel side, but believes they massively underachieved last year, and that is something he is looking to put right.

He said: "I want to keep a lot of the players that are here already and I think If I can add a few more we will be able to have a real good crack at things.

"I'm looking forward to bringing ideas from my pro days into the team, and make us a real hard team to beat. I'm also still in touch with a lot of people which is always nice, so I can go to them for players if I need to, although it depends how Tuesday goes."

Arundel's pre-season training starts Tuesday at 7.30pm, at their Mill Road ground, anyone familiar to a Division 1 standard of football is more than welcome to attend.
