FOOTBALL: Mullets lose nine-goal thriller at Ringmer

ARUNDEL Football Club had a nightmare evening at Ringmer in County League Division 1 on Tuesday evening, when despite being 3-0 up after 20 minutes, they eventually crashed to an injury-time 5-4 defeat.

Things started badly for Mullets, with Lloyd Walker and Ashley Martin unable to make the game owing to work, which left Scott Tipper as the only substitute. And after goalkeeper Ben O'Connor picked up a first-half injury, Tipper was thrown into the fray at half-time, as Rob Grove took over between the sticks.

Arundel boss Richard Towers said: "It was sickening an we came away absolutely gutted. We started really well and played some of the best football we have this year. Four of their goals came from headers, though, so I wasn't happy with the defending, their second was hotly disputed as well.

"The ball came off the underside of the bar onto the line and after a delayed reaction the linesman eventually gave it, but the lads swore it never crossed.

"It just feels like we haven't had the rub of the green this season at all and I'm hoping things will change. It's a big blow as you don't expect to be three up and lose a game, although I said to the lads after, you can't concede five and expect to win."

Josh Biggs opened the scoring from Russell Hardwell's pass before Gary Norgate struck twice.

Ringmer pulled one back through Ryan MacMillan before O'Connor took a heavy knock on his ankle, which hampered him until half-time.

MacMillan headed in the effort which Mullets heavily contested on 30 minutes, before Jo Tubon headed the equaliser on 43 minutes.

Grove took over in goal at the break and made a couple of saves early on as Arundel took time to settle. But he could do nothing when Kieran Patel poked home into the corner after a goalmouth scramble on 65 minutes.

Matt Huckett side-footed home a volley with 15 minutes left after a neat one-two move to level things up. But it was late heart-break for Mullets as Tubon rose in the box to head over Grove as the 90 minutes ticked over.

Arundel's home match with St Francis on Saturday was postponed due to a water-logged pitch.
