FOOTBALL: Mullets win derby at Wick

NEW boss Gary Block took charge of Wick Football Club for the first time on Tuesday evening but his side went down 2-1 at home to local rivals Arundel in County League Division 1.

Block has replaced Carmelo D'Anzi, who quit on the eve of the season, and he brought in several new players for the clash with Mullets.

Block, formerley manager at Selsey and Pagham, said: "It will be a hard couple of months for us, there are some good youngsters here but we need a complete rebuild job. We need to get players to keep us in the division, which is what I've been asked to do, and we should be able to stay up no problem.

"The future will be all right. At Selsey, it was quite hard to get players, but we're pretty central here and have a good catchment area.

There isn't loads of money but we can afford to offer a bit of petrol money and a little win bonus here and there."

Wick chairman Keith Croft said: "Gary is a fantastic coup for the club. To have a manager of his pedigree and stature on board is fantastic.

"My aims are still the same. We need to stabilise and steady the ship after what has been three months of hell."

Wick went ahead after just 10 minutes on Tuesday, A long ball was met by Wick's Mark Thomas, whose looping header beat Arundel keeper Ben O'Connor. They went close to doubling their lead moments later but Dave Spinson's cross hit a post.

Chances were few and far between for Arundel, although they had an effort ruled out on 20 minutes when Scott Tipper headed home but was adjudged to have pushed a defender first.

Tipper then flashed a header just wide, before O'Connor tipped over Mark Walitan's strike.

After half-time, Mullets were intent on hunting down the ball and their renewed desire was rewarded with a goal on 55 minutes when Russell Hardwell's free kick was glanced home by Gary Norgate.
