FOOTBALL: Wick lose at home to Pagham

WICK Football Club were unable to build on their first win of the season from Saturday when they went down 2-1 at home to Carl Stabler's Pagham side on Tuesday evening.

A wet and windy night greeted the teams of Wick 2009-10, otherwise known as Pagham, and Wick 2010-11. There was little love lost between fans and the away bench for much of the evening, with Pagham now managed by last season's Wick boss, Stabler.

The first half of the County League Division 1 clash was eminently forgettable with little of note. Both sides opted for a long ball game that never looked like bearing fruit.

The second half was better, however, and it was a late challenge on 54 minutes by Wick keeper Greg Forster that led to the first goal. Instead of making contact with the ball he clattered Michael Frangou and, after a delay of several minutes while the Lions striker received attention, and after a quick chat with his assistant, the referee pointed to the spot, infuriating the home crowd and bench alike. Andy Weir dispatched from 12 yards with aplomb.

Just eight minutes later, Wick were level after what was easily the best move of the game. Scott Towers crossed from the right, and via a couple of cushioned headers found Danny Towers, who volleyed into the top corner.

It was one of Wick's ex-players, George Gaskin, who netted Pagham's winner after 70 minutes, when the ball broke to him after a game of pinball, and he could not miss from six yards.

That should not have been the end of the scoring, though, and Wick deserved the equaliser that Jack Beadle should have given them. A mix-up between defender and keeper saw the ball land at Beadle's feet on the edge of the area with a gaping net in front of him, but the winger could only lift the ball over the bar with just three minutes left.

Wick manager Gary Brock said: "I thought we deserved something. Tonight's performance was good but we have to do the same against Selsey this Saturday to make it worthwhile."
