FOOTBALL: Worthing lose opener at home to Leatherhead

WORTHING Football Club lost their opening Ryman League Division 1 South game of the season 2-1 at home to Leatherhead on Saturday (August 21).

The game finished 10 versus 10 and Rebels will still be wondering how they failed to take at least a point from the game.

Worthing went ahead on 25 minutes when a low Mark Pulling free kick found Luke Gedling, who fired home from eight yards.

Leatherhead were reduced to 10 men on 63 minutes when Liam Pestle saw red for a second bookable offence but Worthing went down to 10 men just four minutes later when Terry Dodd saw red for violent conduct.

Rebels were made to pay on 72 minutes when Gabriel Odunaike nipped in to chip the ball over keeper Michael Hunter after a long free kick forward.

Leatherhead then got the winner with three minutes left when Tommy Hutchings released Jason Macleod, who coolly slotted home from 18 yards.

Rebels pressed for a late equaliser but Tony Timms' injury-time header from substitute John Lansdale's corner was deflected over and Leatherhead survived the resulting corner.
