AFC come from two down to earn a point

FOLLOWING a bitterly disappointing result against Selsey on Saturday, Tuesday evening saw the arrival of East Grinstead, one of the stronger sides in the Division at the Oaks.

An accident on the A22 meant the later arrival of some of the visiting players while the Uckfield line-up saw the return of Andy McDowell up top and Sam Scanlon centre half with Jack Divall moving to the right back berth.

It was the visitors who made the brighter start and they took an early lead when confusion in the AFC box saw a near post effort come back across the face of goal and then headed home at the far post.

McDowell bicycle kicked AFC’s first chance wide from six yards and good efforts from the same man and Gould forced saves from the visiting stopper as the hosts began to get on top.

However it was East Grinstead who struck again when the right back put the ball into his own net before AFC crucially pulled one back before half-time, a great left footed strike from a free kick from Gould making it 2-1 at the interval.

The home side came out pumped-up and received their just rewards within a minute when McDowell pealed off the full back on the far post to loop a header into the net from a Joe Dryer delivery.

A controversial goal in reply came from East Grinstead on 50 minutes with just a hint of offside and chances then came for both teams before Dan Pollard’s enticing cross found Gould who scored to make the final score 3-3.

A much better performance from AFC, who are away to Horsham YMCA on Saturday.
