Agony for Eastbourne Town as Horsham are set to be crowned league champs

Eastbourne Town manager John Lambert congratulated champions-elect Horsham on a fine campaign and hopes his team can comeback stronger next season.

With just two games to go, Horsham are six points clear of Town at the top of the Southern Combination Premier. Even if Horsham lost their last two fixtures and Town won to draw level on points, Horsham’s vastly superior goal difference would see them crowned champions. Horsham are set to take their place in the Ryman League South next season and with just one team promoted, Town will lick their wounds and prepare to go again in the Southern Premier.

“We gave it a real good go and we tried our best but it just was not meant to be. We came close but Horsham are a very consistent side and I think their experience showed. The table never lies and the best team won. I phoned Dom (Di Paola, the Horsham manager) and congratulated him and his team on their success. The season Dom won the title with East Preston, they did so by a record 93 points. This season, if they win their next two, they will set a new record of 97. We can get up to 91 points and that’s a great achievement from our lads and any other season that would have been enough to win the title.”

Town returned to winning ways last Saturday as they recorded a 4-0 victory at Horsham YMCA. Town took the lead at Gorings Mead on 23 minutes through Callum Sherriff and Wesley Tate doubled the advantage on 45 minutes.

Jason Taylor made it three just after the break and Brett Patton completed the scoring with an 85th minute fourth. This Saturday they welcome mid table side Broadbridge Heath to the Saffrons. Their final game of the season will see them travel to Lancing at Culver Road on April 23.

“We have to finish as strong as we can. We owe that to the club and to the fans,” added Lambert.
