Another big night in store for Common

Another big night lies in prospect for Little Common's footballers today (Tuesday).

Macron Store Southern Combination League Division One side Common will travel to Ryman League Division One South high-flyers Worthing in a Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup quarter-final.

“To get to the last eight of the senior cup is a fantastic achievement, and testament to all the boys and the attitude that we’ve shown,” said Common player-manager Russell Eldridge. “We’ve overcome teams from higher leagues and we’ve earned our right to be in the quarter-finals.”

By my calculations Common are the only senior club in Sussex to have reached the last eight of three separate knockout competitions this season.

They are also still going in the Peter Bentley Challenge Cup and have won eight of their 11 cup ties so far in 2015/16, three of them against higher level clubs.

“Before the season we spoke about doing well in the cups and to reach three quarter-finals is no mean feat,” added Eldridge, whose team has yet to play a league game in 2016.

“I don’t know what it is, we’ve not done anything different, but we’ve shown a determined effort and attitude. We’ve got two (quarter-finals) still to contest, and we’ll be doing all we can to get through to a semi-final and hopefully a final.”

A big task awaits Common against a Worthing team which plays its football two levels higher up the non-league pyramid, but Common will be buoyed by their tremendous 5-1 win at home to Arundel in the previous round last Tuesday.

Although rain is forecast for this afternoon and evening, there should be no danger of the tie not going ahead because Worthing play on an artificial 3G pitch. Kick-off is 7.45pm.

Other clubs left in the competition, the final of which has been played at Brighton & Hove Albion’s American Express Community Stadium in recent seasons, include Bognor Regis Town, Eastbourne Borough and Whitehawk.
