Appleton primed to make compromise plea to ex-players

The Trust’s bid to take the Blues out of administration has been received by administrator Trevor Birch, along with the one made by Balram Chainrai’s Portpin.

The outcome to that process is expected to be resolved this week, as Pompey wait to see who their new owners will be.

A key area remains the agreements with the men who left in the summer to help keep the club afloat.

Birch struck compromises worth in the region of £8.5m with those players.

But the Trust’s bid proposal indicates there is just an initial £2m allocated to pay those who left.

That leaves a sizeable gap to be bridged – but Appleton has revealed he is willing to go back to those players if the Trust gain control.

Appleton said: ‘I haven’t spoke to the players yet. The administrator has to get in a comfortable position with the Trust for financing the football club over a longer period.

‘Then, if it gets to a point where I need to intervene to speak to players who have left the club, then I’ll do my best to do that.

‘We’ll pursue every avenue we need to. If I have to have a conversation with the players who have left then I will do.

‘Let’s hope something can get sorted out.’

Like everyone, Appleton is itching for Pompey’s future to be resolved. He is keen to see exactly what Portpin are proposing in their bid.

Appleton said: ‘I spoke to Trevor at the weekend to see if I could have a copy of their (Portpin’s) cash flow and what they expect to spend.

‘He’s mentioned the offers and it’s about sifting through that. Then he has to see what is the best offer to take the club forward.’
