Aston wonder strike clinches win

Bexhill midfielder Aston chipped the goalkeeper from approaching the centre circle as the Pirates ended Worthing United’s five-match winning start to the league campaign with a 1-0 win.

“It was a fantastic piece of individual skill,” said Bexhill manager Marc Munday. “To see it is one thing, but to do it...it’s one of those that could end up by the corner flag.”

The Pirates came under considerable pressure in the early stages of the Macron Store Sussex County Football League Division Two fixture, but remained resolute in defence and always looked dangerous on the break.

Bexhill’s best chance of the first half saw Jamie Morgan fire over on his first start with just the goalkeeper to beat after good work from Scott McDonald and Allan McMinigal.

A Worthing player suffered a leg injury which resulted in an ambulance being called during half time.

Bexhill preserved their lead after the break and might even have added to it. McMinigal unselfishly tried to pick out a team-mate at the end of a fine solo run when shooting might have been a better option, while Dan Hill and Nathan Tudor couldn’t capitalise on a two-on-one situation late on.

“I just feel that if we’d played for about 180 minutes, I couldn’t seem them scoring,” added Munday. “They’re a good side and they play a lot of football, but for all their possession, we had the three or four best chances of the game.

“Once again it was just a solid team performance. We went out there with a gameplan; at the minute we don’t want to concede. We’ll always create chances as well and as long as we put one or two away, I’m confident we’re going to win games.”
