Atkin doubtful for cup clash

Rye United are sweating on the fitness of Andy Atkin for the visit of Peacehaven & Telscombe tonight (Tuesday).

Sussex County Football League Division One’s joint highest scorer with 12 league goals is struggling with a tight hamstring and may well sit out the John O’Hara League Challenge Cup second round tie.

Rye manager Scott Price plans to leave out Jack Franklin with the midfielder is banned for the trip to Dorking Wanderers in the league on Saturday.

Price said: “We’ve not good a big squad as such. We’ve got 14 very good players, but we do need to keep everyone either fit or away from suspension to have any chance of silverware.”

After falling at the first hurdle in their defence of the Sussex RUR Charity Cup last month, Rye will be keen to do well in the John O’Hara Cup as it represents their last realistic chance of winning a knockout competition.

But they will have to be at or very close to the top of their game to get the better of a strong Peacehaven side in a clash of the teams lying third and second in the league.

The clubs have already met in the league at The Salts and they fought out an entertaining 1-1 draw. Kick-off is 7.45pm and you can receive updates by following @SimonNewstead on Twitter.
