Attwood at the double in vital win

HASTINGS United’s prospects of avoiding relegation look a whole lot brighter after results went their way on Saturday.

While the U’s triumphed 3-1 in what was dubbed a must-win clash at home to fellow strugglers Harrow Borough, Leatherhead - the third of the trio of teams fighting the drop - lost by the same scoreline away to Canvey Island.

What this means is that Hastings now find themselves out of the bottom four relegation places going into the final two rounds of fixtures in the Ryman Premier season.

Ryman Premier bottom six (played-points): Harrow Borough 40-44 (-16 goal difference), HASTINGS UTD 40-44 (-18), Leatherhead 40-41 (-13), Tooting & Mitcham Utd 39-27 (-52), Aveley 40-26 (-41), Horsham 40-14 (-64).

Hastings were the better side in the first half at The Pilot Field but had to wait until the 49th minute to take the lead through Attwood’s cool finish.

Goldberg flashed an effort just past the post and Jack Dixon grazed the woodwork before Attwood claimed a classy second on 70 minutes.

Harrow pulled a goal back courtesy of Jon-Jo Bates just a couple of minutes later but Goldberg made sure of the points with an absolute cracker of a third.
