Bennett bemoans finishing as Jarvis rescues a point

Littlehampton Football Club manager Mark Bennett bemoaned his side’s finishing after a late Jason Jarvis strike rescued a 2-2 draw against Mile Oak in County League Division 2 on Tuesday.

It’s was Golds’ third game in six days after winning 2-0 at Steyning last Wednesday and progressing past Westfield in the John O’Hara Cup first round with the same scoreline on Saturday.

But Bennett refused to use that as an excuse and said: “I was not pleased at all, far from it. We had enough chances to win three games and just couldn’t take them.

“There is no way of buttering it up, it was two points dropped. It was our third game in a few days, but that is no excuse for not hitting the target from three yards.”

After Alex Kew fired Golds ahead with a neat half-volley, Aaron Ransom leveled for Oak on 18 minutes. Golds then had an effort disallowed, before Kieron Howard put Oak ahead on 67 minutes, but Jarvis was on hand to level on 85 minutes and preserve their unbeaten start.

At Westfield, Kew gave Littlehampton the lead on 12 minutes when he pounced on a saved shot to net, before he doubled the lead four minutes later when he cut in and shot underneath the keeper.

Golds then had several chances to win by a larger margin with Kew, Nathan Peacock, Danny Hand and Jarvis all going close.

Michael Hendrick put Littlehampton ahead after just six minutes at Steyning after he had won the ball off the home side’s keeper.

Jarvis made it 2-0 on 18 minutes when he fired home after Jamie Thompson flicked the ball on. Steyning put Littlehampton under pressure in the second half but Golds comfortably held on for the win.
