Bermuda call-up for Smithis a headache for Freeman

Smith has been called up for international duty for Bermuda and is set to miss the game at Billericay followed by Lewes’ home clash against Wingate and Finchley next Saturday.

Lewes manager Darren Freeman said: “Jonte has been a very important player for us and it is hard to replace a player who is a regular goal threat.

“But as I keep saying each week, I have a great squad of players here and it will be a chance for someone to show they can step-up.

“I have Alex Laing and Josh Street and I’m hoping Miguel Baptist will be fit again this Saturday.

“We have a few options and it’s up to me to pick a side I feel can go out and get us a win.”

Lewes remain bottom of the table after a disappointing 2-2 draw with fellow strugglers VCD Athletic at the Dripping Pan last Saturday.

Lewes were two-up and cruising thanks to a double from Smith against their relegation rivals until Lloyd Cotton was sent off for what the referee perceived was a deliberate handball.

With seven games remaining Lewes are bottom on 26 points, four points behind second from bottom VCD Athletic. Farnbrough are third from bottom on 34 points with Brentwood fourth from bottom on 34 points but they have played just 35 matches.

Freeman added: “There are seven games left and realistically we have to win all seven. “There are plenty of points still to play for and we have to keep trying our best. Things are not going our way and VCD was a great example of that. It happens when you are at the bottom but there is no point feeling sorry for ourselves.”
