Bexhill United and Little Common are both targeting top three finishes in Sussex County Football League Division Two with just over a third of the season remaining.

Fifth-placed Common are five points behind third-placed Haywards Heath Town having played an extra match, while Bexhill are one place and four points adrift of their crosstown rivals with a game in hand.

Common player-manager Russell Eldridge said: “We will definitely try our best. If you look at the fixtures we’ve got remaining, we’ve played a lot of the top teams whereas it was probably the opposite way round last year.

“We will be doing our best in the new year to win as many games of football as we can and see where that leaves us. It’s a competitive league and anyone can beat anyone. We’ll take each game as it comes and hopefully have a good 2014.”

Bexhill manager Kenny McCreadie said: “Eastbourne will win the league; that’s for sure. Loxwood have got experienced players and I think they will finish second. Third’s up for grabs. There’s always a team that does a late run and I hope that’s going to be us.

“We’ve kept the gap to the top three at nine points and I think we’ve definitely got a great chance. The best thing about it is we’ve still got to play the boys round about us. I need to get my strongest side. If I keep my normal side, you win every game.”

Bexhill will hope to be back in action at home to Broadbridge Heath tomorrow (Saturday). Jamie Salvidge is expected to return for a key game against a fourth-placed Heath side which boasts the division’s best defensive record having conceded only 12 goals. Common are fixtureless tomorrow.
