Bexhill out to upset leaders

The Pirates will travel to Macron Store Sussex County Football League Division Two top dogs Worthing United tomorrow (Saturday) aiming to repeat their 1-0 win over the same opponents in September’s reverse fixture.

Bexhill manager Marc Munday said: “They’re on form and they’re the best footballing team in the league, but we’ve beaten them once and we’ll just do what we did before. We’re under no pressure.

“I think they’re comfortably going to win the league and they won’t want to lose to us twice. We’re going there to win. We’ll give it our best shot and see what happens.”

Worthing are nine points clear at the top having played a game more than second-placed Wick & Barnham United and have won 12 of their 13 home league outings so far.

A win tomorrow will cement one of the three promotion places and seven points from their final four matches will make sure of the title.

Bexhill remain in fourth spot - two points behind third-placed AFC Uckfield Town having played two more fixtures - and have picked up seven points from their last three contests.

As Bexhill’s promotion hopes have faded, Munday has started to have half an eye on next season and has given a couple of youngsters from the reserves a chance in the front side.

Josh Pickering scored in last weekend’s 3-2 victory at home to Storrington and Corey Wheeler has also impressed of late.

“I’m pleased with the youngsters,” Munday continued. “When they come on they really want to put their stamp on the game and I’ve got no worries about playing them.

“They’re going to get bigger and stronger, and they’ve got the right attitude. They’re young, but they’re not scared to put their foot in and they’re wanting to play at this level.

“Josh played well all game (against Storrington) and deserved a goal. He was involved throughout the 90 minutes and worked well together with Scott McDonald up-front.

“He really did put a shift in and there’s no reason why he won’t be starting the following week after a performance like that. Corey did well too when he came on.”

Andy Garman remains suspended and goalkeeper Yankuba Camara is still injured. Bexhill’s remaining two games after tomorrow are away to Oakwood next weekend and Little Common on Easter Monday (April 6).
