Bexhill set for league opener

The Pirates will kick-off their Macron Store Sussex County Football League Division Two programme with trips to Mile Oak today (Saturday) and AFC Uckfield Town on Monday.

Bexhill manager Marc Munday said: “I want to win it, but I’m realistic and it’s (a case of aiming) as high as possible and I think we’ve got the players that can do that.

“Little Common (who Bexhill lost 4-3 against in a Peter Bentley League Cup first round tie last weekend) have been a top four side in the last couple of seasons and I see no reason why we can’t be around that level.”

With three clubs having been promoted and only one relegated last season, Munday sees this term as a good opportunity for teams - and not just Bexhill - to make a real impact.

“There’s only 15 teams in the league so if there’s ever been a chance to get out of it, it’s now,” he continued. “I really don’t see it as massively strong because of all the teams that have gone up.”

Bexhill’s first two opponents won their opening league fixtures so Munday is expecting tough matches, but nonetheless wants to win them.

“If we come out of this weekend with four points that would be good, but six points is what I want,” he added. “They’re two hard games, especially Mile Oak, but they’re both winnable.

“Obviously you want to get your first set of points on the board. I want to tighten everything up so if we get a goal or two that should be enough. I’m really looking forward to it.”
