Hurst’s dramatic 3-2 defeat of Ferring on Saturday was their first league win since November - largely due to weather-enforced inactivity.

And with six games in hand on second-placed Barnham, manager Mark Betts believes his side have an opportunity to make up ground in the closing stages of the season, especially if they have a full side to pick from and ex-Horsham YMCA and Burgess Hill midfield Richard Carter is available.

He said: “It’s still in our hands, and I think we will know by the end of this month where we stand. We have not quite captured our form from earlier in the season but if we can get Richard playing regularly we have a chance.”
