Blues back to winning ways with RUR Cup win at Loxwood

AFTER six games without a win in all competitions, Rustington Football Club moved into the third round of the John O’Hara Cup on Saturday with a 3-1 win at Loxwood.

Blues manager Brett Torode praised his side’s performance, and described it as a “much-needed win.”

Rustington progressed with a brace from Matt Huckett and a strike from Simon Clayton, and Torode said: “We did okay, I felt that this sort of result and performance has been coming in recent weeks, and it all came together nicely.

“We showed good character, and it’s always nice to have a cup run.

“We looked solid at the back and it was a much-needed win for us.

“I’m pleased and we need to carry this on, going into a couple of local derbies against East Preston in the RUR Cup on Saturday, then Clymping the following week in the Senior Cup.”

Huckett had fired Rustington in front early on, and after Clayton had extended the lead, Loxwood pulled a goal back, only for Huckett to restore Blues’ two-goal advantage late on.

Ricky Robertshaw made his Rustington debut.

RUSTINGTON: McCarthy; Bennett, Neal, Butcher, Green; Bibb, Jones, Clayton, Huckett; Adams, Robertshaw. Subs: Withers (Robertshaw 74), Boxall, Valentine.
