Blues praised after valiant Vase effort

Selsey put in a valiant effort as they held back an in-form Horsham side – until three second-half goals saw the Blues get knocked out of the FA Vase at the High Street Ground.

Horsham play a tier above Selsey in the Southern Combination League and are two points off top spot while are Selsey at the foot of the first division.

Despite the gap, the hosts’ resolute defence were organised to limit Horsham’s chances on goal in the first half.

But the game ran away from the Blues in the second half and as their legs began to tire, the visitors pressed.

Horsham opened the scoring two minutes after the hour when Charlie Farmer headed home Kieran Pamments’ cross past Warren Boyt in the Selsey goal.

This gave the visitors confidence and they went on to score two more quick goals, Pamment scoring their second in the 71st minute after the ball was cut back to him by Terry Dodd.

Joe Shelley took the game out of Selsey’s reach five minutes later with a fabulous solo goal as he looked up and spotted Boyt off of his line, before striking a half-volley from 30 yards out, which flew into the back of the net.

Selsey boss Steve Bailey said he was proud of his players after they gave a good account of themselves against higher-tier opposition.

“We played pretty well to be honest – we set up defensively to tackle their main threats and we kept them out for the first half but in the second half our players were got tired and that is when they began to score,” Bailey said.

“Hopefully this is a turning point as we defended much better than we have in recent weeks against much better opposition, so hopefully we can carry this performance into our league games.”
